Location: South Tyrol's capital is located roughly in the center of the region. The Bolzano basin was already populated thousands of years ago. Originally, the first settlement in this place was called "Bauzanum", probably after the first inhabitant of the place, who called himself "Bauzus". The city was then built in the 12th and 13th centuries, with the medieval urban layout remaining unchanged until the 19th century. From then on, Bolzano rose to become a popular tourist resort, especially the district of Gries became world famous as a climatic health resort.
The municipality of Bolzano includes 5 districts as well as the small mountain village of Kohlern. Particularly worth seeing is, of course, the historic old town with its arcades (Lauben). Bolzano is also known for its various attractions and cultural activities. For example, the Ötzi can be admired in the Archaeology Museum or numerous trade fairs on a wide variety of topics can be visited in the Bolzano Exhibition Center. In total, about seven museums as well as four castles and palaces await you in Bolzano. In the arcades, on the other hand, you still succumb to the flair of the "small big" city. In 2021, by the way, it was the 1st city in Italy to be awarded "Climate Municipality Gold", the highest award for municipal climate protection recognized throughout Europe.
