Location: The Sardinia of Catalans and Corals
Alghero is one of the most lively and exciting towns in Sardinia. The former Catalan enclave enchants with a picturesque old town, an architectural mix of cultures and jewelry handicrafts made from its world-famous corals. From the picturesque old town on a rocky promontory to the traditional harbor and a long beach, its unique atmosphere unfolds. And it has a lot to do with the history of Sardinia's fifth largest city: Alghero was a Catalan enclave for over 400 years. The Sardinian inhabitants were replaced by Catalan ones - and so even today many mostly older inhabitants of Alghero speak the Catalan dialect Algherese.
The Catalan flag flies above the town hall alongside the Sardinian, Italian and European flags. A dynamic coexistence of cultures that has also significantly influenced the architecture: Catalan Gothic can be found in many of the city's buildings, such as the church of San Francesco in the heart of the old town. No wonder, then, that the inhabitants of Alghero affectionately call their city Little Barcelona. By the way, people here have been living from lobster fishing for centuries. However, the northwest coast of Sardinia is world famous for its corals. Numerous jewelers in Alghero still process the colorful sea plants into special jewelry.

Bizarre rocky coast and mystic caves

Massive limestone cliffs in turquoise blue sea: Capo Caccia is one of the natural highlights near Alghero. The impressive cape is a total of seven kilometers long and drops over an impressive 200 meters into the sea. The famous Grotta di Nettuno, on the other hand, goes deep into the rock: the dripstone cave, about four kilometers long, forms a legendary cave system around a saltwater lake. The Grotta di Nettuno can be reached from Alghero by bus in the direction of Giardini/Via Catalogna or by boat trip. Getting there is also easy: Alghero has its own international airport (AHO) with connections to the Italian mainland as well as to many other European cities.
