Location: Castelbello, situated at 587 m above sea level, has 890 inhabitants and has been the seat of the municipal administration since 1928. Castelbello looks back on a lively and long history, which in all probability already begins before the 12th century. The first written mention of the village dates back to 1238 and was made in connection with Castelbello Castle, which had been the seat of justice since 1303 and still makes the village unmistakable today.

Kastelbell Castle once belonged to the Lords of Montalban, later it passed to the Tyrolean sovereigns and the Counts Hendl - from a military fortress it developed more and more into a stately palace before it was abandoned to decay and fell victim to several fires. After a long restoration phase, the palace is now open to the public between mid-April and the end of October and offers an exhibition on the Via Claudia Augusta Roman road. Also worth seeing is the remarkable architecture and the frescoes in the Romanesque castle chapel.

Castelbello is situated on the slopes of the Sonnenberg and is the starting point for various tours, both on foot and by mountain bike. Here you can cycle and hike on the sunny side of Vinschgau, through chestnut and deciduous woods, up to the alpine pastures and the Trumser and Vermoier peaks, or along the former irrigation channels on the Waal paths. On the orographic right side of the Adige river, on the other hand, one crosses the apple orchards of the valley floor - from Latschinig or Tomberg one reaches the mountain peaks in the chain that separates the Vinschgau valley from the Ulten valley.

Despite its size, the village of Castelbello truly has a lot to offer, from impressive natural scenery to summer and winter sports, gourmet addresses and typical products that you should not miss.
