Location: The municipal area of Karneid essentially comprises the Karneider Berg, a low mountain range in front of the Rosengarten group of the Dolomites to the west, which is bordered on three sides by the lower Eisacktal, the Eggental and the Tierser Tal. In the valleys the municipal boundaries largely follow the watercourses of the Eisack, Eggentaler Bach and Tierser Bach, in the east the municipal area ends at the crests of the Gummerer Eggs and Samberg.

The town hall and other public facilities are located in the hamlet of Kardaun in the Eisack Valley in the extreme northwest of the municipality. The village is located at an altitude of 300 meters at the exit of the Val d'Ega in the immediate vicinity of the South Tyrolean capital Bolzano. Also in the Eisack Valley, on an elevated slope at 500 m, are the small village of Karneid and further east at 330 m at the exit of the Tierser Valley Blumau. The largely wooded ridge of the Karneider Berg provides space for the two villages of Steinegg (at 800 m above Blumau) and Gummer (at 1100 m in the area of the Eggental). Finally, the sixth and smallest fraction is formed by the farms of Breien, located on the orographic left side of the Tierser Tal.
