Location: Merano is located in the Burggrafenamt in the Adige Valley. The municipality occupies a large part of the wide valley basin of Merano, which opens up to the southeast and is bordered from the west by Vinschgau, from the north by Passeier and from the southwest by Ulten. The basin is framed on the north side by the Texel Group, which belongs to the Ötztal Alps, on the east side by the Sarntal Alps and on the southwest by the Ortler Alps.
The urban area extends to the north and east of the valley basin. The Passer River flows through it, which is why Merano is also called the "Passer City". The western border with Marlengo, Cermes and Lana follows the Adige river. The neighboring community to the northwest, which has grown together with Merano, is Algund. On the north side, the municipal border with Dorf Tirol runs along the slopes of the Küchelberg and at the entrance to the Passeier Valley along the Passer River. To the northeast, Merano borders on Schenna, to the southeast, where the municipal territory on the Tschögglberg mountain reaches well over 1,000 m in places, on Hafling and Vöran, and finally to the south in the Etschtal valley on Burgstall.
Merano is divided into several districts. The "actual" Merano with the old town lies at an altitude of 325 m on the orographic right side of the Passer; Obermais and Untermais, also summarized as Mais, are located opposite on the left side of the river. Gratsch and Labers are rural districts: Gratsch occupies the extreme northwest of the urban area at the foot of the slopes of the Texelgruppe, while Labers extends over the slopes of the Tschögglberg in the east. Sinich with its industrial and commercial area is spatially clearly separated from the rest of the town in the south.
The climate of Merano is Mediterranean. The Texel Group to the north and northwest protects the valley basin from precipitation and cold winds. The valley, open to the south, provides a balanced supply of warm air (even in late autumn and spring), favoring the growth of Mediterranean plants such as palms, cypresses, holm oaks, laurel, myrtle and Lebanon cedars.
