Location: The Val di Sole (in German Sulztal or Sulzberg, Sulzbergisch Val de Sol) lies northwest of Trento in the Italian Alps. Together with the Val di Non (Italian: Val di Non), it forms a valley system running towards the Adige Valley. Administratively, the valley belongs to the Comunità della Valle di Sole of the Autonomous Province of Trento.
The Italian name Val di Sole probably has nothing to do with the sun. Since there are names with the same sound in North Tyrol, such as Sulztal, Sulzkogel, etc., one could think of a common Celtic root, from which the Italian sole and the German Sulz have developed. By no means too far-fetched could be a Thuls, which could be connected with the tribe of the Tuliassi from the Tabula Clesiana. Similarly speculative is the derivation from the Celtic water deity Sulis, who want to establish a connection with the mineral water springs in Val di Sole.
In Val di Sole and in Val di Non the dialects Solander (Sulzbergic) and Nones (Nonsbergic) are spoken, which are sometimes grouped together as Anaunic-Ladin dialects.
While the Val di Non forms a wide depression that slopes gently towards the south and does not resemble a valley in any way, the Val di Sole is a typical erosion valley formed by the glaciers, which runs in slight sweeps from Mostizzolo in a southwesterly direction towards the Tonale Pass. The southern slopes, which culminate in the Brenta Dolomites in the eastern part of the valley and in the Presanella and Adamello groups west of the Vermiglio valley, are less indented than the northern slopes, which are cut by long lateral valleys. This valley system is drained by the Noce River. The geographical boundary to the east with the Val di Non is formed by the Barnès stream from the Bresimo valley, which joins the Noce at Mostizzolo. To the west, the border runs along the Tonale Pass. The Val di Sole occupies an area of 610 km².
