Location: The municipality of Polpenazze del Garda is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Garda in the province of Brescia in Lombardy. About 6 km from the shore of Lake Garda, picturesquely situated in the hills of the Valtenesi, the village was founded in 1454 and has about 2,600 inhabitants. The inhabitants of Polpenazze del Garda used to live from agriculture, the cultivation of wine and olives. Even today, the village is the largest producer of olive oil in the entire Valtenesi region on the western shore of Lake Garda. In addition, more than 50 percent of the region's wine production still comes from the vineyards around Polpenazze del Garda. Nevertheless, tourism is now well developed in this region as well.
The municipality is world-famous above all for the remains of a pile-dwelling village from the Bronze Age that were found nearby. These have been part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 2011. These pile dwellings prove that the region was already inhabited in the Bronze Age. Another great attraction for tourists from all over the world is the castle of Polpenazze del Garda. The fortress was built in the 10th century primarily to protect the village from invading Hungarians. Today, however, only a few remains of the impressive castello can be seen, after it had been destroyed and later rebuilt several times in the past centuries. The fortress shares this fate with many other castles in the region.
The region around Polpenazze del Garda offers historically interested vacationers a very special highlight - the castles, called Ricetti. These fortifications were intended to protect the population. You can find them for example in Moniga del Garda, Padenghe sul Garda, Soiano del Lago, Calvagese della Riviera, Puegnano, Manerba del Garda, San Felice del Benaco and Desenzano del Garda. Some of the castles are inhabited today and are always open to visitors.
