Location: The history of Subbiano is closely linked to that of the Arno. The village is the first one encountered on the left bank as one moves upstream along the Casenino Valley. Numerous watermills built along the river still testify to the close relationship between the town and its river.
Approaching Subbiano from the south, the Torre Longobarda (Longobard Tower) catches your eye. Like the entire castle, it overlooks the Arno and, together with the oldest town center with its mill and historic squares, is reflected in the river.
To gain an insight into the traditions and culture of this corner of Casentino, a visit to the Museo della Casa Contadina is recommended. The museum tour reconstructs the domestic environment of the peasants in this area. The Centro di Documentazione della Cultura archeologica is also interesting, since in this area 3000 years old settlement remains have come to light. Particularly frequented at that time were the Catenaia Alps, on whose slopes the ancient tribes practiced cattle breeding and agriculture. The mountains, characterized by high water resources and consequently by a charming flora with oak, chestnut and beech woods, are ideal for weekend tourists, but also for experienced hikers, who can find routes suitable to their skills at an altitude of over 1,100 meters. Also worth seeing are the old water mills of Falciano on the mountain slopes and the nearby Castello di Valenzano.
The best time to visit Subbiano is in September, when the Grape Festival is held: During this festival you can taste the best local products and get to know the original traditions of the place.
