Location: In the heart of the Valdelsa, well connected to the cities of Siena and Florence, Castelfiorentino is a town in balance between modernity and tradition, where the many traces of the past and the vital activities of the present coexist perfectly.
Like many other centers in the area, Castelfiorentino developed in the Middle Ages thanks to its location near the crossroads of the Via Volterrana and the Via Francigena. In this castle, of which traces are still preserved near the Pieve dei Santi Ippolito e Biagio and the Collegiata dei Santi Lorenzo e Leonardo (both dating back to the XII century), after the battle of Montaperti in 1260, the peace was signed that ended the conflict between Siena and Florence, a historical event that is remembered today with a fascinating re-enactment.
Outside the walls are the Church of San Francesco, a rare example of Gothic architecture in Valdelsa, and the Sanctuary of Santa Verdiana, recognizable by its imposing Baroque façade and dedicated to the patron saint of Castelfiorentino, who lived for over thirty years in the 13th century in the solitude of a small cell that is still visible inside the church. This was originally the site of the magnificent panel depicting the saint, a 14th century work by an anonymous Sienese artist, now kept in the nearby Museo di Santa Verdiana along with other masterpieces such as the precious panels depicting the Madonna and Child by Cimabue and Taddeo Gaddi.
The monumental frescoes, painted between 1484 and 1490 by Benozzo Gozzoli, come from two tabernacles on the side of the road not far from Castelfiorentino and can be admired in the BeGo Museum, dedicated to the famous Florentine painter, famous for the colors and elegance of his figures.
Leaving the old town and entering the lovely surrounding countryside, one cannot help but notice the orderly landscape, shaped in part by the work of revolutionary agronomist Cosimo Ridolfi, who in 1834 founded the first agricultural institute in Italy at nearby Villa di Meleto, where modern agricultural techniques were taught in an experimental manner.
This cultivated land and the courtesy of its inhabitants were also remembered in 1819 by the famous literary figure Stendhal, who, passing through Castelfiorentino, so appreciated the tales of the local stories and legends in which he participated that he compared his experiences to those he had at La Scala in Milan. Perhaps also as a result of this vocation for the arts and the performing arts, Castelfiorentino has had a theater (Teatro del Popolo) since 1867, which is still the hub of the cultural life of this city.
