Location: Buggiano is a strategically important place in Tuscany, settled throughout history by Ligurians, Etruscans and Romans. It controls the road between Florence and Lucca. In the Middle Ages there were internal conflicts and fights with neighboring towns. In 1315 the battle between Ghibellines from Lucca and Guelphs from Florence took place in Santa Maria. From 1339 Buggiano came under Florentine control. In the 19th century the area became an important commercial center with connections to Livorno both by roads and rivers.
In Buggiano you can visit the medieval town, Villa Bellavista with a splendid panoramic view and various churches, including the Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso with coats of arms of the municipalities of Valdinievole and the Parish Museum. Nearby is the Abbey of Santa Maria with valuable 13th century sculptures, including Romanesque capitals, marble vangeliary and baptismal font.
Buggiano is a good base from which to explore Valdinievole and is also home to the coveted healing waters of Montecatini Terme, which can be enjoyed in elegant thermal baths.
