Graden is located northwest of Köflach, nestled in the forested hills of the Lipizzaner region in western Styria. The village stretches along both sides of the Gradnerbach stream and ranges in elevation from about 700 to over 1,300 meters above sea level. Meadows, farms, and vast forests define the landscape. Visitors here won’t find a spectacularly staged vacation destination, but rather a peaceful, time-honored cultural landscape.
At the heart of the village are the village square and the parish church, visible from afar. All around, the farms are scattered across the slopes and side valleys. The area is particularly well-suited for people who enjoy walking: dirt roads lead across open meadows, forest trails climb up to lookout points, and at higher elevations, the view opens up over the homeland of the Lipizzaner horses and stretches far into Western Styria.
Graden has a special connection to Styrian folk music. This was the home of the “Kern Buam,” who for decades were among Austria’s best-known folk music groups. The Kern Buam Panorama Trail commemorates them. Its various routes lead from the village square through forests and over ridges, past memorial stones and traditional inns. Graden is also a good starting point for longer hikes. Via Gradenberg, you can head toward the Terenbachalm and the Oskar-Schauer-Haus. There, the landscape changes: the cultivated slopes of the valley give way to quiet forests and, finally, to open alpine meadows. The surrounding Gleinalpe and Stubalpe offer both leisurely alpine pastures hikes and more challenging summit tours.
