Location: The small town of Soiano del Lago with a population of just under 2000 people is unknown to many Lake Garda vacationers, but golf fans certainly know it as the location of the renowned Gardagolf Country Club. If you are looking for relaxation and tranquility away from the tourist spots, Soiano is just the place. The village is located above the lake and is surrounded by the hilly landscape of the Valtènesi, where you can see cypresses, olive trees and vines everywhere. Despite its rural location, you can quickly reach the lake shores or the popular towns of Moniga, Manerba, Salò or Desenzano.
Soiano has a long history dating back to the Bronze Age. Nowadays you can still visit pile dwellings from this era in the peat bogs. In 2011, these pile dwellings in the Alpine region were even declared a World Heritage Site. Archaeological excavations have also discovered remains of Roman buildings, indicating that Soiano had some importance in ancient times.
The Castello di Soiano, built in the 12th century, is one of the sights that should not be missed. Later, the bell tower of the parish church was built on the foundations of the castle. From the tower you can enjoy a sensational view over the hills of the Valtènesi wine region. During the summer months, the castle hosts theater performances and concerts. The baroque church of San Michele from the 16th/17th century is also worth seeing.
The Valtènesi has always been known for its noble and high quality wines. It is a must to do a wine tasting or visit a wine festival. The olive oil from Soiano is also known far beyond the borders of the small municipality and is produced by family farms. It goes perfectly with the delicious Garda fish.
