Location: Kals am Großglockner is a municipality with 1121 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2022) in the Austrian district of Lienz (East Tyrol) and district-wide the third largest municipality in terms of area. The municipal area of Kals includes the entire Kalser Valley and a small part of the Iseltal. The main village of Ködnitz itself is located about 30 kilometers north-northwest of the city of Lienz. Economically, agriculture and tourism play an important role in the municipality, with Kals benefiting from its location on the Großglockner (3798 m), Austria's highest mountain. The municipality is located in the judicial district of Lienz.

Kals am Großglockner is located in the northeast of East Tyrol on the border with Salzburg and Carinthia. The municipal area of Kals is located in the midst of the high mountain landscape of the Hohe Tauern and includes the entire Kalser Tal formed by the Kalserbach stream with its side valleys running to the east. These include the Lesachtal, the Ködnitztal and the Teischnitztal. Parts of the Granatspitzgruppe, the Glocknergruppe and the Schobergruppe with a multitude of mountains of more than 3000 m height belong to the municipal area. The highest point of the municipality is the Großglockner (3798 m above sea level), the lowest point of the municipality is at the Kalserkraftwerk in Unterpeischlach at 760 m above sea level.

The Kalser community area is enclosed in the west, north and east by the mountain groups of the Granatspitz, Glockner and Schober massifs. The main ridge of the strongly glaciated Glockner group separates the municipal area of Kals from the provinces of Salzburg and Carinthia. Here lies the Großglockner (3798 m), the highest mountain in Austria. Other well-known mountains of the Glockner main ridge running from northwest to southeast are the Hohe Kasten (3189 m), the Eiskögele (3426 m), the Rosmariswandköpfe (3511 m), the Hofmannspitze (3722 m) and the Kleinglockner (3770 m). To the south, the Glockner group is joined by the Schober group. With the Hochschober (3240 m), the Glödis (3206 m), the Roter Knopf (3281 m) and the Bösen Weibl (3119 m) the most important elevations are also located here on the Kalser municipal territory. In the west, the Granatspitz group separates the Kalser area from Matrei in East Tyrol. The most important elevations here are the Große Muntanitz (3232 m), the Vordere Kendlspitze (3085 m) and the Kalser Bärenkopf (3079 m).
