Location: In the heart of Tremezzina we find the village of Mezzegra. This charming town on the western shore of Lake Como, rich in history and culture, is divided into six districts: Azzano, Pula, Giulino, Bonzanigo, Mugnano and Ganzo. Its name comes from the Latin word "Mezzo" - in the middle, and the first mention dates back to the Middle Ages.
The mild climate of this area has favored the cultivation of olive trees and citrus fruits since ancient times, and their export brought wealth to the local population. Thanks to the revenues, the influential citizens had the opportunity to build beautiful buildings and equip them with high artistic value.
A famous but sad historical episode of Mezzegra tells about the last days of Benito Mussolini and Claretta Petacci, who were arrested and executed by partisans in Villa Belmonti in Giulino.
The greenway passes through the village. The 10 km long scenic and panoramic route connects six municipalities and is located at the foot of the mountain and partly on the lake. It allows you to visit the most famous places without having to get in the car.
Mezzegra, like any town on Lake Como, offers visitors a wide range of attractions.
In the neighborhood of Giulino, in a mystical place called Monte degli Stampi, there are special types of stones, the size and shape of horses' hooves. According to legend, they could belong to the hooves of the horses of Noah's Ark that survived the flood and came ashore here. Others attribute these footprints to the hooves of the devil incarnate. It is not for nothing that in the Middle Ages this place was the meeting place for witches in the whole area. The third version says that they are the footprints of extraterrestrials.
In terms of architectural and artistic works, you should visit Palazzo Brentano. The unusual 5-story building from the 17th century (including 2 basements) gives the impression of floating in the air and impresses with its inner and outer beauty. The building belonged to the noble Brentano family, who later moved to Milan and then to Germany. Inside you can admire paintings by the famous Giulio Quaglia on the ceiling.
Worth seeing is also the church of Sant'Abbondio, located in the western part of Mezzegra. The church was probably built in the 12th century in Romanesque style and was completely restored in 1702. It has a striking facade overlooking the lake, and the interior holds frescoes by the famous painter nicknamed Fiamenghino.
In Azzano, right on the lake, you can admire the church of San Gaetano, also known as Chiesa della Madonna della Pietà, built in 1670 by order of the famous Brentano family. The peculiarity of this church is the main altar, decorated with images of the Virgin Mary, as well as Jesus and John.
