The construction of this palace was commissioned on the instructions of Grand Duke Francesco I de' Medici. Although he was married to Joanna of Austria, he fell in love with Bianca Cappello and decided to have a palace built. This palace was built by Bernardo Buontalenti on the site closest to Palazzo Pitti, the grand ducal residence. After a few months, Bernardino Poccetti was commissioned to decorate the façade with impressive graffiti grotesques. These depictions symbolized the path of the two lovers in the form of allegorical motifs, including masks, human figures, animals, spiraling plant forms, putti, winged creatures, flowers, fruit, sphinxes, harpies and, in particular, vases. These decorative elements were highly symbolic.
In the middle of the wall of the Palazzo di Via Maggio, above the Medici coat of arms, a king and queen are depicted gazing deeply into each other's eyes. Their gaze recalls the moment when Prince Francesco I de' Medici and his noble bride Bianca Cappello "swore eternal affection". After the early death of Giovanna, his first wife, the two lovers were finally able to marry in 1579.
The palace has an underground passageway that leads from the foundations to Palazzo Pitti. This tunnel was used by Bianca Cappello and Francesco I for their secret meetings. During the Second World War, this tunnel played an important role in protecting many works of art in the Vasarian Corridor. Nowadays, the corridor of the palazzo is no longer open to the public.
The Palazzo Bianca Cappello Residenza d'Epoca is located close to famous sights such as the Accademia Gallery, Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Signoria. It is also only 7 kilometers from Florence-Peretola Airport and the freeway.
