Property description 12th-14th century castle in the upper Scrivia valley in the village of Piano in Isola del Cantone - Liguria

The castle is located on a rocky outcrop and is surrounded by the river Vobbia, which flows into the Scrivia and gives the valley its name. The property was built between the 12th and 14th centuries and has a square floor plan with two round watchtowers.
Upon entering the main entrance, you enter a rectangular courtyard with herringbone paving, which leads to the first floor and the loggia via a wide staircase. The loggia is an atmospheric indoor and outdoor area from which you can access the frescoed hall, which is located on one floor. From there you have access to three interconnected lounges on the same floor. The floors are covered with the typical white Genoese marble and slate.
The ceiling of the lounge is unique and impressive. It depicts a starry sky on a blue background and shows the symbols of the Spinola family, the original owners of the castle. Further frescoes can be admired in the adjoining salons. A door leads to a landing where there is a small bathroom with a shower cubicle. There are two further internal staircases, one leading to the first floor and the other to the second floor, where a large rustic wooden living room with a large fireplace awaits. On both sides of the living room we have access to two double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and walk-in showers. Two further bedrooms are located on the same floor in the adjoining area, as well as a 1970s style bathroom with a sunken bath. On this floor there are also two small terraces leading to the two towers, each of which has three windows.
The second floor has three bathrooms, while the fourth bathroom can be found on the lower floor. If you go back down to the first floor, you will find the fifth bathroom. Before entering the living room along the corridor are the laundry room, the ironing room and the checkroom.
From the first floor you enter the armored room. This floor has two different levels, with the parlor being lower than the two side areas. On the right-hand side are the kitchen and the office area with a separate entrance for the staff. On the left-hand side there is a lounge, from which a second entrance leads to the garden, where there is a fountain and a large pine tree. If we follow the pergola, we reach the main garden.

Further information on request. We would be happy to organize a viewing appointment.

Location: It is a municipality with around 1,500 inhabitants that borders on Piedmont and is the northernmost municipality in Liguria. The current municipal area is the result of the merger of the two villages of Isola and Cantone. Insula is the old Latin name and derives from its position at the confluence of two rivers: the Scrivia and the Vobbia. The town was built around a Benedictine monastery founded in 1216 along the old Via Postumia and dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo. It belonged to the Marquises of Gavi from the Middle Ages and was a land of clashes between the Republic of Genoa and the Diocese of Tortona in order to dominate the territory. It was not until 1218 that negotiations began between the two political factions, dividing the fief into two parts. The left part of the Scrivia stream was assigned to the Genoese Republic, the right part of the river to Tortona. In 1235, it became the sole fief of the Malaspina family and passed to the Spinola family from 1256.
